The pupils, staff and governors of Wohl Ilford Jewish Primary School were delighted to welcome Wes Streeting, MP for Ilford North, to their school on Tuesday.
Mr Streeting’s visit included an interactive assembly where the children were delighted to see the MP join in with the actions to a new song they had learnt especially for the day and a tour of the school conducted by the Year 6 House Captains.
Following this, some of the older pupils took part in a ‘Question Time’ style debate with the children posing some challenging and topical questions which they had written themselves, including questions on local community issues such as local A&E plans, ticket office closures, improvement of local sports facilities, the closure of Glasbury and development plans for Barkingside High Street.
Mr Streeting answered all the children’s questions thoroughly before he and Headteacher, Andrea Elliker, engaged them in a debate to determine a specific topic they felt was important to them which he promised the pupils he would raise in the House of Commons.
Wes Streeting, Member of Parliament for Ilford North said:
Visiting Ilford Jewish Primary School was an absolutely fantastic start to my day. Year 6 pupils did an outstanding Q&A. Kids always ask the hardest questions and this was no exception. They ranged from how I became and MP and what challenges I face through to what I think about tube ticket office closures and Britain’s relationships with the international community.I agreed to raise some of the issues discussed in Parliament which I will seek to do at the earliest opportunity.”
